Here are a few of interesting facts about Amaroo at Trinity and its surrounds.
You will notice the Cycad in between the pool and the bbq area,
this is approx 200+ years old. ‘Just Amazing.’
The name Amaroo derives from an Aboriginal boys name meaning
“Beautiful Place”
The mountains which form the spectacular backdrop seen from our property are part of the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics Rainforest which extends from Cooktown in the north almost to Townsville in the south. The section visible from Amaroo includes the McAllister Range. The highest mountain peak is Mount Bartle Frere at an elevation of 1622m which is located 70km south of Cairns behind Babinda and Innisfail.
Don’t be alarmed if you hear a “clicking sound” that’s a bit like a bird but not quite – it’s likely to be a Gecko. They love our balconies and can also be seen and heard around the pool area, particularly at night when they feast on insects that are attracted to the lights. A pale mustard colour and chubbier than a normal garden-variety lizard they are quite harmless. Another quite alarming sound is that of the Curlew. Often in the dead of night they cry out and are sometimes mistaken for a woman screaming. They are shy of people but if you are lucky, you may see one on the grassy headland in front of our building, or even wandering along the beachfront during the evening.
Between November and May, the possible presence of Box Jellyfish and the smaller Irukandji Jellyfish make unprotected swimming on ocean beaches unsafe. While it is safe to walk along the sand, do not enter the water except within the netted area in front of the lifeguards. If you are unfortunately stung, the best first aid is to pour household vinegar over the sting to neutralise the stinging cells. Do not rub the affected area. You will notice bottles of vinegar stored along the nature strip adjacent to the beach. However, this is not a cure and urgent medical attention should be sought, as in some cases the outcome could be life threatening. Trinity Beach has a swimming enclosure located towards the southern end of the beach where lifeguards are on duty. Whilst the net offers protection from jellyfish, it is still wise to check daily conditions with the lifeguards. Presence of these creatures is rare on the outer reef; however, stinger suits are available for hire on all reef cruises. These have the added benefit of sun protection.
Crocodiles
Hey, don’t worry too much about these fellows. Crocodiles don’t like hanging out with humans, and we don’t like hanging out with them. It’s a good arrangement and it means we rarely ever see each other.
If there is any chance of seeing a crocodile at a beach, or anywhere else for that matter, signs will indicate this.
General rules to avoid contact with crocodiles are:
However, between September and April just be more aware of crocodiles at dawn and at night as it is breeding season. Rivers and creeks are all regarded as croc territory, but during this time of year crocs that would normally be inhabiting these areas will also be on the move and flooding of waterways and low-lying areas can temporarily increase the mobility — accounting for a few beach sightings and closures.
